Computer Slow After Windows Update?

Windows update made your PC crawl? Fix high CPU, disk usage, and performance problems.

Updated: Feb 202610 min read

After a Windows update, your computer may feel extremely sluggish — slow startup, lagging programs, 100% disk usage. Some slowness is normal (background tasks), but if it persists, here's how to fix it.

Fix 1: Wait 1-4 Hours (Seriously)

After a major update, Windows runs background tasks: file indexing, Defender scan, cache rebuilding. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → check CPU and Disk usage. If SearchIndexer, MsMpEng, or SysMain are high, that's normal and will resolve itself. Leave the computer on for a few hours.

Fix 2: Restart After Update

  1. Even if Windows already restarted, do it one more time manually
  2. Click Start → Power → Restart (not Shut Down)
  3. Restart fully flushes memory and completes pending updates

Fix 3: Disable Delivery Optimization

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options
  2. Click Delivery Optimization
  3. Turn off "Allow downloads from other PCs"
  4. This stops Windows from sharing updates peer-to-peer (uses bandwidth and disk)

Fix 4: Disable SysMain (Superfetch)

  1. Press Win + R → type services.msc → Enter
  2. Find SysMain
  3. Right-click → Stop
  4. Set Startup type to Disabled
  5. This helps especially on HDD (less impact on SSD)

Fix 5: Reduce Windows Search Indexing

  1. Open Control Panel → Indexing Options
  2. Click Modify
  3. Uncheck folders you don't need indexed (large media folders, etc.)
  4. Or temporarily stop Windows Search service in services.msc

Fix 6: Update Drivers

  • Open Device Manager
  • Check for any devices with yellow warning icons
  • Update graphics driver from manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel)
  • Update storage controller driver if disk is at 100%
  • Use manufacturer website, not Windows Update, for drivers

Fix 7: Clean Boot

  1. Press Win + R → type msconfig → Enter
  2. Go to Services tab → check "Hide all Microsoft services"
  3. Click Disable all
  4. Go to Startup tab → Open Task Manager
  5. Disable all startup programs
  6. Restart — if faster, re-enable services one by one to find the culprit

Fix 8: Run Disk Cleanup

  1. Search for Disk Cleanup → select C: drive
  2. Click "Clean up system files"
  3. Check Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary files, Previous Windows installations
  4. Click OK → Delete files
  5. This can free 5-30 GB of space

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my computer so slow after Windows update?

After a major update, Windows: (1) Indexes files — causes high disk usage for hours, (2) Rebuilds caches and databases, (3) May have incompatible drivers causing high CPU, (4) May have enabled Delivery Optimization (peer-to-peer updates), (5) Background tasks like Windows Search re-index. Usually resolves in 1-4 hours.

How long does the slowness last after update?

Minor updates: 30 minutes to 2 hours. Major updates (like 23H2 → 24H2): 2-8 hours for background tasks to complete. If it's still slow after 24 hours, there's likely a driver or settings issue that needs manual fixing.

Should I roll back the Windows update?

Wait at least 24 hours first — background tasks may be causing temporary slowness. If still slow after 24 hours, try the fixes in this guide. Only roll back as a last resort: Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates.

Windows update made my SSD/HDD at 100% usage — why?

After update, Windows Search re-indexes all files, Windows Defender runs a full scan, and SysMain reorganizes data. Check Task Manager → Processes tab and sort by Disk to see what's using it. Common culprits: SearchIndexer.exe, MsMpEng.exe (Defender), SysMain. These are temporary.

My computer won't even boot properly after update — what do I do?

If stuck on boot: (1) Force restart 3 times to enter Windows Recovery, (2) Try 'Startup Repair', (3) Try 'boot in Safe Mode' → uninstall the update from there, (4) Use System Restore to go back to before the update. If you can boot but it's slow, use the fixes in this guide.
